Alien Spouse is a performance born of the experience of Going Dutch’s first residency artist of 2024 as she navigated her fresh relocation to the US. Having gone through the process of applying for a marriage-based Green Card, she became acutely aware of the skill with which legal and bureaucratic protocols create obstacles for immigrants that border the absurd.

As an artist, she allowed her lived experience to fuel the creative process in the making of a performance that is a blend of dance, lecture, healing ritual, and dreamscape. Somewhere between legal forms and dance parties, the hope is to spread information to those who don’t know what the process is like and to honor the experience of those who do. Even more relevant today than it was in its first public appearances, Alien Spouse is back with more.

Alien Spouse is brought to you by the Elgin History Museum, Going Dutch, and Side Street Studio Arts' Explorations of Equity in the Arts in Elgin project supported by Healing Illinois.

Going Dutch is a celebration of female and nonbinary voices in the arts, and is supported in part by the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission.

Explorations of Equity in the Arts in Elgin is a SSSA initiative designed to empower and uplift artists of color through curated exhibitions, artist-driven merchandise, and community workshops. This program fosters artistic collaboration, economic opportunities, and racial equity in the local arts sector.
